Strategic Map
After you define the objectives to be reached by applying the strategic plan, you can outline the Strategic Map.
Procedures
To outline a strategic map:
1. | In the Maintenance window of chosen Strategy, select the Tools folder, click Scorecard and double-click Strategic Map. |
The Balanced Scorecard displays all created objectives, divided into perspectives.
2. | How to Create the Strategic Map. |
Objectives can have two types of relationship:
• | Indication |
Trend for other objectives
• | Receiving |
Influences from other objectives
These are called Cause and Effect relationships.
A caption, represented by an arrow, is found at the top left corner of each objective. By comparing the penultimate and the last measurements of the values worksheet, this indicator displays the trend of the objective.
Arrow up means a rising trend. Arrow down means a falling trend.
Each arrow also has a color, which indicates the objective status in relation to its indicators. Basically, an arithmetic mean is used between the indicators involved to calculate the indicator position. The gray color means there are no goals for any indicator of the objective.
3. | Click Edit to outline strategic map. Objectives can be positioned anywhere on the screen. To drag an objective, click the first button found on the top of the screen, represented by an arrow. When you move the cursor on an objective, a cross shaped arrow indicates it can be dragged. Drag it wherever you wish. |
4. | To enlarge an objective, move the cursor over its edges. A bidirectional arrow is displayed. Change the size of the objective as needed. |
5. | To change the color of an objective or the background color of each perspective, place the cursor on one (objective or perspective) and right-click it. Click Change Color and choose color. Right-click on objective to change its design type (Ellipse or Rectangular). |
6. | To change the area size of a perspective, move the cursor on the division between perspectives. A bidirectional arrow is displayed for you to resize it. |
7. | To connect objectives, click the third button on the top left corner of the screen, showing two arrows with opposite directions. After you click this button, pass the cursor on an objective and the cursor shape changes to a cross. To connect objectives, press the right button of the mouse and drag the cross shaped cursor from one objective to the other. This action creates a cause and effect relationship between two objectives. To delete a connection, click the first button (an arrow). Click the arrow (link) you wish to delete. It will turn yellow. Click fourth button (an X) to delete selected links. You can choose several links to be deleted at the same time. |
8. | In addition to horizontal separations by Perspectives, you can create vertical separations. It will be called Division. This offers a better Map view in the case of multiple objectives. To create a division, enter the needed number of divisions in the Divisions box. To change Division name, type name over division title. |
9. | Use the second button, represented by an arrow and square grid, to define objectives grouping items within a single perspective. So you can place several objectives in a box and connect this box to other objectives or other boxes, detaching this grouping. To create a Grouping Item, click this button and mark the desired area by right-clicking it. The system then handles this Grouping Item as an entity, able to change all characteristics (colors, sizes, links) as if it is an objective. |
Procedures
How to Analyze strategic map:
1. | To analyze a strategic map, you can change the analysis base date (to a past analysis, for example). Change the date and the strategic map displays the status of the objectives on that base date. |
The calculation of the objective status is based on an arithmetic mean of its indicators, against the goal stipulated on the period in which the Base Date is found. If you have fractional and accumulated goals in the same period, choose against which goal the strategic map must reflect the analysis of.
2. | To view only the objectives of a previously created Strategic Theme, choose it in the box displaying themes. |
Do not forget to save changes.
3. | In non-Edition mode, click any objective to do a drill down, displaying the status of its indicators as well as its cause and effect relationships. |
